French Macarons at Paris in Town, North Palm Beach

French Macarons from Paris In Town Cafe in North Palm Beach

I recently joined the local Chowhound board and as I was checking out the rest of the site I stumbled upon a French pasty called macarons.  At first I thought it was a misspelling because I’ve heard of macaroons before and after seeing a picture of it, I was kind of confused.  I thought they were coconutty and swirly.  Macarons are meringue based and made from a mixture of egg whites, almond flour, and both granulated and confectionery sugar. According to Wikipedia, the confectionery is characterized by its smooth, domed top, ruffled circumference, and flat base. Connoisseurs prize a delicate, egg shell-like crust that yields to a moist and airy interior. It sounded so good and I became curious about how they would taste like.

I wasn’t able to find any local places around the South Florida area, so I decided to put the question out there on the Chowhound board. One of the responses suggested Paris in Town, a cafe up in North Palm Beach. I emailed them and asked if they had macarons and they told me they did, and they usually order them from Paris, France. I asked if I could order a box (1 dozen for $16.50) and they took down my name and number to call me back to let me know when they would be in. That was yesterday. So today, I got a call back and they told me that they came in and to pick them up when I was able to. Luckily, my husband works in the area so he was able to get them for me today.

They were smaller than I expected, but that was ok with me. I just wanted to try them! But first, I took a picture. Macarons are really delicate and one of them kind of crumbled, but it was expected. My favorite flavor was the chocolate, and it was chewy and light as I bit into it.  I have yet to try the other flavors, but the two I tried were pretty good and I’m glad that I had a good experience ordering from a local place.

If there are any other places in the South Florida area that have French macarons, do tell! If I’m in that area, maybe I’ll stop by! :)

    Susan,
I became addicted to these treats after going to Laduree and Pierre Hermes in Paris. Unfortunately, les macarons are difficult to find in the Palm Beaches and are not the easiest things to make at home. The ones at Whole Foods are passable for a beginner.

Our neighbor brought us back a box of these from Paris. I tried my first one today. WOW.  Good to know they might be obtained locally.  They would make a great gift.
